Week 3 Flashcards
what is a research population
complete set of objects, people in world
what is a research sample
subset of a given population
what are variables
set of related events that can take on more than one value
what is an independent variable
- what is changed or manipulated
- it is controlled or selected to determine its relationship on a observed outcome
what is a dependent variable
- the observed result of the IV being manipulated
- what you measure
what is levels of IV
- different categories of the IV
e.g. vaccine study participants have two levels (vaccinated or not)
what are control variables
variables that are kept constant to prevent them influencing the effect of IV on DV
what are the four data types
- nominal
- ordinal
- interval
- ratio
what is nominal data
cannot be ordered, cannot be counted
categorical
e.g. country, gender, occupation
what is ordinal data
can be ordered, but cannot be added or subtracted
e.g. satisfaction rating (extremely dissatisfied to extremely satisfied)
what is interval data
can be ordered, and their difference can be measured, but you cannot compute a ratio between two values (=no meaningful zero exists)
e.g. exam mark, date, year
what is ratio data
interval + can take ratio between two (=has a meaningful zero)
e.g. distance, height, annual income, number of success
which data types are qualitative
nominal and ordinal
which data types are quantitative
interval and ratio
how are nominal and ordinal data represented in jamovi
categorical
