Week 3(1) Atherosclerosis, Thrombosis, Embolism, Ischaemia and Infarction Flashcards
1
Q
What is Ischemia?
A
Loss of blood supply to a tissue because of a blocked blood vessel.
This results in
- coagulative necrosis
2
Q
What is Infarction?
A
The death of a tissue (necrosis) SECONDARY to ischaemia followin abrupt interference with the blook supply.
3
Q
What are 2 TYPES of Infarction?
A
Arterial Infarction (WHITE)
- follows sudden obstruction, shaped according to the territory of blood vessel supply, PALE with red border in later states of scarring
Venous Infarction (RED)
- obstruction to venous drainage of organ or tissue
- ocngestion leading to rupture of the small vessels = RED
4
Q
What are the consequences of Infarction?
A
- insufficient oxgen
- insufficient nutrients
- excess waaste products
5
Q
So how does Ischemia affect the cells?
A
STASIS IS BASIS ;)
Cells like homeostasis. If there are SLIGHT changes the cells can adapt but if the changes are HUGE –> cell injury or death (necrosis)
