What is a contact lens specification

• legal requirement
• have to give CLs specification within 3 months of initial fitting
  Requires:
• name and address
• DOB
• name, registration and signature of prac
• date of fitting
• expiry date
• details of lens in enough detail to be replicated

What if the px wants a reprint of the specification

Answer 3

• Can give another spec to ox
• Must ensure in date
• Expiry date must be the same as the original exp date
• Are allowed to charge a fee
• Cannot deny this to ur px otherwise

Question 4

What is the legal requirements for supplying lenses

Answer 4

• Must have valid CL specification
• Check date and location – don’t trust a picture
• Can be from any other optician or registered eye care professional – OMP, CLO, student
• Should anything go wrong, YOU the supplier may be liable – if concerns try to verify with stated practitioner or practice before supplying
• Cannot supply diff lens than the specification

Cosmetic/fun/halloween lenses

• No rx
• Must have in date eye exam however
• Do not require CL spec
  o College of Optom advises u do
  o They require direct supervision in order to be supplied
• Ur responsibility to report anyone who does supply them newsagents, websites etc

Can you share your specifications across diff opticians

Need px consent
Avoids whole new appointment for refit
Make notes on record for all communication
Answer yes no questions with no more info than is on the spec
