Week 2 - Understanding Humans Flashcards
Understanding Cognition let us
- understand what users can and cannot be expected to do
- identify nature and cause of problems users face
- develop theories, models, and guidelines that can lead to better designed products
2 Types of Vision asdf
Fovea (focused) vs Peripheral (outer)
asdf
Make target objects pop out in user’s periphery via contrast
Gestalt Laws of (visual) Perception
Organisation into groups
- proximity, similarity, common fate
Resolve ambiguity and fill in missing data
- continuity, closure, symmetry
Direct Attention
- figure / ground
3 measures we perceive auditory input
intensity (amplitude)
frequency (pitch)
timbre
Pros and Cons of Sound Alerts
(pro) reduces demands on visual attention
(con) has low resolution (less info)
(con) presenting absolute data is difficult (diff sounds)
(both) attention-grabbing / annoying
Type of Audio - Speech
Requires more processing than plain sounds
- processing may be affected by accent, speed of speech, etc
phoneme
smallest unit of sound that distinguishes one word from another
Haptic Perception
Tactile : connected to sense of touch
Kinaesthesis : sense and motor activity based in the muscles, joints, and tendons.
Receptors responsible for tactile sensation
Mechanoreceptor
