Underneath is a nuerovascular bundle which increases the risk of bleeding.

What treatment would you give to a patient with a rib fracture.
Appropriate pain relief to prevent pneumonia
What is a flail chest ?
- Life threatening condition
- 3 or more ribs broken at at least 2 places
- likely impending respiratory failure
- intubation and surgery are likely
How would you treat a flail chest ?
- Analgesia
- PCA / nerve block
- Anaesthesia + PPV ( positive pressure ventilation )
- ORIF ( open reduction internal fixation)
