week 2 thermo Flashcards
what is heat capacity ?
heat energy required to raise the temperature of an object by 1 degree or 1K
what is the second law off thermodynamics (clausius and kelvin)
clausius - no process is possible who’s sole result is the transfer of heat from a body of cold temp to a body of higher temp meaning heat can not go from hot to cold
kelvin - no process is possible in which the sole result is the absorption of heat from a reservoir and its complete conversion of work meaning all the heat will and can not be turned into work some will sink cold
entropy reversible heat reaction.
why does the entropy of an isolated system always increase?
because there is many ways to maintain the structure of a high entropy structure compared to a few ways of doing this for a low entropy system therefore it is mathematically overwhelmingly more likely that low entropy highly ordered structures will transfer into high entropy disordered structures
what makes a chemical reaction feasible (spontaneous)
the entropy of the universe must increase
the Gibbs energy of the system must decrease
