  • King of ragtime want to Texas in 1868 took formal lessons and piano and harmony
  • Toured around and then in St. Louis led the development of a Music Genre now known as ragtime. name derived from the fact of the rhythm is ragged - The pianist right-hand plays syncopated rhythm’s against a steady rhythm maintained by the left-hand
  • worked at the Mapleleaf club - providing inspiration for his hit song ‘the maple leaf rag’followed by ‘the entertainer’
  • he moved to New York City to work on his operatic work “Treemonisha’
  • never saw his opera come to life died in 1917
  • Treemonisha was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1976
