Week 2- The Internet and the World Wide Web. Flashcards
What is the Internet?
First of all, the Internet is a physical network of
computer networks. It is made up of hundreds of
thousand of computers - large, small and very
small - that are connected together by various
physical connections, typically coaxial cables,
optical-fibre cables, or wireless connections.
What is packet switching and what are the roles of the two protocols known together as TCP/IP?
The process of transferring the digital messages between the various computers connected to the Internet. The messaging process itself is managed and controlled by a number of ‘protocols’, the most important of these being the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and the Internet Protocol (IP). Together these are referred to as the TCP/IP.
What is the client / server model?
A CLIENT is a network computer or a software product located on a network computer that requests a service from another network computer.
A SERVER is a network computer or a software product located on a network computer that responds to a request from another network computer and provides some service.
What is an Intranet?
An intranet is a privately owned local computer network that is constructed and managed as if it is an internet. It uses internet technology and the TCP/IP protocols. As with most private networks there are usually security rules and access rules in place to control who can use the intranet and what they are able to view or do on it. Intranets are quickly replacing the more traditional approaches to constructing private local area networks (LANs).
What is the World Wide Web?
The World Wide Web is an abstract network of digital resources. It is a vast collection of digital information, data and resources organised into millions or even billions of ‘web pages’. Each web page is a package of information that can be viewed using a client computer software package called a web browser.
What are Web pages, hyperlinks and Web sites?
A Web page is a collection of content presented to a computer user as a single visual display by means of a software application known as a Web browser.
A hyperlink is an active region on the page – typically a piece of text or an image – that responds when the user clicks on it. The response of the hyperlink is to request another web page from the Internet.
What is TCP?
The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is the protocol that manages the transfer of a packet between two computers.
The TCP lets two machines have a controlled conversation about exchanging packets.
What is IP?
The Internet Protocol (IP) is the protocol that manages the computer addresses used within the TCP. It determines where
a packet should be sent next as it moves from computer to computer.
