Steam Engine

- What – In 1711, Thomas Newcomen created a contraption powered by coal, known as the steam engine, to pump water from mines. After 1763, James Watts further developed Newcomen’s into a more efficient machine. Later on, the steam engine would be adapted for use in various sectors of the economy such as trade and production.
- When – The Industrial Revolution, 1711 – 1763
- Where – Great Britain
- Significance:
- Lead to the creation of the steam locomotive which further expanded trade and decreased the time it took to transports goods/people
- Helped to power the Industrial Revolution, allowed factories and mills to shift from natural power (water, wind, human, or horse) to steam power
- Was used to power larger machinery in factories leading to an increase of the production of consumer good
- Contributed to the growth of the Middle Class, others besides the aristocracy became wealthy through their own efforts and means Textbook
