What is a closed population?
A group of animals that remains constant throughout the study
What is an open population?
A group of animals where individuals may be moving in and out throughout the study
What is horizontal transmission of a disease?
Not generational- passed between animals either directly or indirectly
What is direct horizontal transmission?
Disease spread directly from host to host, e.g. through coughing, sneezing etc.
What is indirect horizontal transmission?
Spread through vectors, either living or non-living. Living vectors can be mechanical, such as fleas, mozzies, or biological, which means the agent undergoes part of its lifecycle with the vector. Non-living vectors are fomites
What are fomites?
Inanimate objects or materials that carry infection, such as vehicles, clothing etc.
What are arboviruses?
Viruses spread through the bite of arthropods such as ticks and mozzies.
