Week 2 (Pectoral region and Brachial Plexus) Flashcards

1
Q

Pectoralis major

A

2 heads: sternocostal head and clavicular head
Junction of the two heads is at the sternoclavicular joint
Medial attachment: medial aspect of clavicle, sternum, and costal cartilages of ribs 1-7
Lateral attachment: intertubercular groove of the humerus

Action: medially rotates, flexes and adducts the humerus

Innervation:
Lateral pectoral nerve medial to axillary area and under the clavicle
Medial pectoral nerve pierces pectoralis major and going into the pectoralis minor

Q

Pectoralis minor

A

Attaches superolaterally to coracoid process of the scapula and attaches to ribs 3-5

Action: anteriorly tilts the scapula and depress the scapula

Innervation: medial pectoral nerve

Q

Subclavian muscle

A

(inferior to the clavicle)

Action: depresses the clavicle and stabilizes the subclavian joint

Nerve: nerve to the subclavius

Attaches to the first rib and clavicle (pulls clavicle inferiorly)

Q

Intercostal Brachial Nerve (tickle nerve)

A

Originates from the second intercostal space and travels to floor of axilla

Sensory innervation for the armpit

Clinical relevance: when a female receives breast cancer surgery, this nerve can be injured when they perform lymph node samples from the axilla
