Positionality statement
an explanation of how the researcher’s own identity intersects with their analysis
Ontology
the philosophy on the nature of human beings’ existence and the nature of reality
free will
refers to whether humans actually make choices on their own or whether there are external forces controlling all choices we make
axiology
the philosophy of what has value
epistemology
the philosophy focused on knowledge and knowing
paradigm
a way of looking at the world
post-positivist paradigm
a paradigm of research focused on explaining and predicting phenomena
causality
determining whether one variable caused another (i.e. what came first)
a priori
belief there is a world that exists outside waiting to be observed
self-efficacy
the confidence people have in themselves
reliability
when a measure in fact measures the same thing every time
validity
when a measure in fact measures what it is intended to
internal logic
whether or not the basic tenets and propositions of the study contradicted one another
external logic
whether the tenets and propositions of the study contradict other widely agreed upon tenets and propositions in similar content domains
interpretive paradigm
a paradigm of research focused on understanding and describing experiences
symbols
words, numbers, and/or gestures that represent something else
constitutive approach
refers to communication being a continuous cycle of sending and receiving information between people and there being a process of feedback and adjustment based on the exchange of information
critical modern paradigm
a paradigm that aims to critique institutions of power and emancipate people disenfranchised by these institutions
activists
researchers who emphasize their role in emancipating people from the hidden structures that oppress them
self-reflexivity
reflexivity about ones own subjective values, biases, and inclinations
critical post-modern paradigm
interested in resistance and exposing taken for granted assumptions that stigmatize certain groups of people
dominant ideology
a system of mean-ing that people take for granted as a way of life
resistance
the idea that different ideologies are constantly battling for dominance in our society
