Week 2 - Nursing Research Flashcards
Research Process
Identify problem, discussion of problem, review literature, re-define problem, select methods, implement change
Research Problem
An educational issue or problem in the study; an area of concern where there is a gap in knowledge that requires a solution that can be described, explained, or predicted to improve nursing practice
Research topic
The broad subject matter being addressed in a study
P
Patient population
I
Intervention or area of interest
C
Comparison intervention or group
O
Outcome
Hypothesis
A special type of proposition that can be tested empirically
Null/Statistical hypothesis
There is no relationship between variable; either accept or reject
Research Hypothesis
there is a relationship that exists between varibales
Variables
An bservation that can be measured by assigning number to each dimension; Independeant/Dependent/Controlling/Confounding
Independent
Something that is changed by the scientist
Dependent
something that might be affected by the change in the independent variable
Controlling
a variable that is not changed
Confounding
Varibales that interfere with the relationship between the independent and dependent variables; External & Internal
External Validity
Do that results apply to the broader population
Internal Validity
Is the independent variable responsible for the observed changes in the dependent variable
Counfounding variables that threaten external validity
Participants, sample size, data analysis
Confounding variables that threaten Internal validity
Maturation, History, Instrumentation, regression to the mean, selection, Attrition, diffusion of treatment
Maturation
Changes due to normal growth or predictable changes
History
Changes d/t an event that occurs during the study, which might have affects on the results
Instrumentation
Ant change in the calibration of the measuring instrument over the course of the study
Regression of the Mean
Tendency for the participants selected b/c of the extreme scores to be less extreme on a retest
Selection
Any factor that creates groups that are not equal at the start of the study
Attrition
Loss of participants during a study
Diffusion of treatment
Changes in participants’ behavior in one condition b/c of information they obtained about the procedures in other conditions
Language of Theory
Construct, Proposition, Concepts, Metapadigm, theory
Construct
Property that is neither direct or indirectly observed. Words or phrases to communicate key idea to others
Proposition
Statement about the relationship between concepts
Concepts
words or phrases that conveya unique idea or mental image that is revealed to theory
Theory
a set of concepts that link through proposition to provide an explanation of the phenomenon
Metapadigm
perspective applied to the world
Deductive
Thinking that moves from the general to the particular
Inductive
Thinking that moves from the particular to the general
Empirical indicators
measuring tools
Theoretical framework
structure for the study by linking the abstract to the empirical
model
pictorial representation of the concepts and their relationships
