Week 2 Network Administration Flashcards
Simple network Management Protocol (SNMP)
Used to monitor and configure devices on a network as well as receive alerts directly from those devices.
SNMP MANAGER
A separate computer or server that is responsible for communicating with the SNMP Agent devices on the network.
Management information Database (MIB)
Managed objects database tracked by the agent. Any status or statistical information that the network management system can access.
Bus topology
A network topology in which all nodes are linked by a single cable called a backbone cable.
Domain Name System Protocol (DNS)
A protocol responsible for translating human-readable domain names to machine-readable IP addresses.
Dynamic Routing
A process where the router automatically modifies routes based on the current status of the route in the routing table.
Event viewer
A monitoring tool that displays an event log that can be used to troubleshoot Windows-based system problems.
Full-Duplex
A communication mode in which the sender and receiver can both send and receive at the same time.
Gigabit Ethernet
An Ethernet cable type with a speed of 10/100/1000 Mbps.
Fast Ethernet
An Ethernet cable type with a speed of 10/100 Mbps.
Guided Media
A physical medium via which transmission of signals occurs.
Half-duplex
A communication mode in which both the sender and receiver can send and receive information, but only one can send information at a time.
Hop
The path a data packet makes from one router or intermediate point to another on a network.
Host
A device in a network that connects with other hosts. It could be a client computer, a server computer, or any other type of computer.
Host ID
A 12 character alphanumeric string that serves as a computer specific identifier for a license.
Host Machine
A computer on which a hypervisor runs one or more virtual machines.
Hub
A centralized network connection-sharing device that transmits data from a connected device to its other ports.
Hypervisor
A computer software or hardware company hat creates and runs virtual machines.
Infrastructure as a service (IaaS)
Provides on-demand computing, storage and networking resources on a pay as you go basis. The IaaS manages infrastructure while the customer is in charge of all other deployment tasks. Ex. Applying OS, applications
IP address
A unique identifier that ID a device on the network. It is modifiable.
IPv4
The fourth version of the internet protocol. It utilizes 32-bit addresses.
IPv6
The sixth and most updated version of the Internet Protocol. It uses 128-bit addresses.
Logical Network
A virtual representation of a network that is a segment of a larger network or local area network.
MAC Address
A physical address that ID a specific device on a network. Ex. 00-B0-D0-63-C2-26
OSI Model
A Networking Model that defines computer functions into a common set of rules and standards for o support compatibility. It defines how network data is transferred.
PaaS Platform as a Service
Provides cloud-based software components for applications.
It is a platform for the development of customized applications. The he organization can manage all servers, storage, and networks, but the developers are in charge of managing applications.
Powershell
A tool that functions as both a language and a scripting tool. It configures and automates administrative procedures and provides sys admin solutions for commonly conducted operations.
Ring topology
A network topology in which each computer is linked to precisely 2 other computers.
RIP (routing information protocol)
A distance-vector routing protocol that periodically sends out its full routing table to its immediate neighbors.
Software as a Service (SaaS)
Distributes third party software to users via the internet. Most programs are browser based and do not require downloads or installation.
Simplex
A communication mode in which data only moves in one direction. From the source to the destination.
Static Routing
A process in which routed are added to the routing table manually.
Store and forward
A technique in which nodes in a network store received frames and check for errors before forwarding packets to the next node.
Switch
A device used to connect multiple computers in a network.
Router
A device that connects multiple network components and transfers data packets between them.
Switching
The practice of transferring information from one computer network to another.
Syslog
A protocol for sending system log or event messages to a syslog server.
Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)
Allows programs and computer devices to transfer information across a network. Main goal is to transfer packets over the Internet and to ensure that data and messages are transmitted across networks.
Trunk
A communications line designed to carry multiple signals simultaneously to provide network connectivity between two points.
Twisted pair
A physical link consisting of a pair of cables twisted together.
Unguided Media
A method of transmission that carries electromagnetic waves without the use of a physical component.
Web server
A combination of hardware and software that employs network protocols such as HTTP to react to client requests via the web.
Wireless Area Network WAN
A network that covers a vast geographical area and typically connects several LANs.
