What are serious games?
Games that are originally used for entertainment purposes. It often shows good, explorative learn-by-doing gameplay.
What is gamification?
Gamification is using game elements for non-gaming contexts
What is gamefull design
Gameful design = gamification done right, it really avoids pointsification or exploitationware
What is playful learning?
This happens more spontaneous, there is no goal or winner. Based on creativity and has no ‘rules’
Which of Bloom’s taxonomy levels can be supported by gameful interactions, and how?
All of them, gaming is closely related to learning
How do elements of gameful interactions link to the different theories of learning?
Constructivist learning is facilitated by the fact that learners can learn at their own pace
Behavoirism can be facilitated by conditioning > you deserve a medal when doing something good.
Cognitivist learning is faciliated by the reflection in game > NPC’s telling you it is not a good idea.
How do elements of gameful interactions affect motivation?
We tend to be more motivated to play games, both intrinsic and extrinsic. This can be done by learderboards, (entrinsic) or that players have their own freedom, facilitating interaction and relevant feedback (intrinsic).
How do gameful interactions affect cognition?
Serious games have shown to have direct effect on learning, has they help with making info meaningful and facilitating deeper processing.
How does gameful interactions affect emotion?
they are enjoyable, so we already start with a good mood. Realism is key in this.
Why should we consider games in education

- Motivation
Why cant we use all game elements in edu products?
Too much toeters en bellen can use up our cognitive resources, after which we are not able to encode well.
