Week 2: Isomers Flashcards
Define isomers?
Isomers have the same molecular formula bit different arrangements in space
What are constitutional isomers?
Same molecular formula; different atom-to-atom connectivity
What are stereoisomers?
Same atom-to-atom connectivity; different spacial arrangement
x2 types of stereoisomers
- conformational isomers
- configurational isomers
x2 types of configurational isomers?
- enantiomers
- diastereomers
what are conformational isomers?
differ by rotation about a single bond
what are configurational isomers?
interconversion requires breaking bonds
what are enantiomers?
non-superimposable mirror images
What are diastereomers?
not mirror images
what compounds do we find cis/trans isomers in?
cyclic compounds
cis or trans when substituents on sp3 carbon both above plane
cis isomers
cis or trans when substituents on sp3 carbon 1 above and 1 below plane
trans isomers
___ and ___ are relative terms
Cis and Trans
- substituent in relation to another
what functional group contains E/Z isomers?
alkenes
what type of bond fixes atoms in space?
pi-bond (no rotation about a pi-bond)
