Week 2: Intro to Circuits Flashcards
What is capacitance?
The capacity of an object to hold charge
What is the formula for Capacitance?
C = Q/V C = capacitance, Q = Charge and V = Voltage
What are the units for capacitance?
1 Coulombs/Volt = 1 farad
What is a capacitor?
The name of a device made specifically to store charge
Capacitance in a parallel plate capacitor can be calculated by:
C= κεA/d
Dielectric constant of the material x Permitivty x Area / distance between plates
Work is equal to F x D, what else?
W = (qΔV)/2 q= charge, V = voltage
Energy is = to the charge x __________
q x ΔV
What would happen to a charge if no electric field is present?
Nothing
What would happen to a charge if the electric field was constant?
It’s trajectory will be parabolic
What would happen to a charge if the electric field was a monopole?
2 cases:
- If the charges are opposite then they will orbit
- If the charges are like they will have a hyperbolic orbit
What is an electron volt (eV)?
The energy gained by an electron across 1 volt
What is electric current?
The rate at which charge flows
i = Δq / t
Measured in coulombs/sec or amps
