What is ethics?
A branch of philosophy that aims to answer the basic question, “what should I do?”
Where is morality inherited from?
Most people inherit their morality from their family, community, or culture.
When inheriting morality, is the process conscience or unconscious?
The process is unconscious.
What is law?
A creation of a basic, enforceable standard of behavior necessary in order for a community to succeed and which all people are treated equally.
The Scales of Justice represents what?
The balance of the individual against the needs of society and a fair balance between interest of one individual and those of another.
What does the Sword of Justice represent?
Represents a symbol of power, protection, authority, vigilance and might.
What does the Blindfold represent?
Represents equality.
Where does Canada’s law come from?
Our society originally came from British rule. Laws were carried over to this country and since then, and have evolved over the years.
What is subjectivism?
An ethical belief that right and wrong are completely relative to our own subjective preferences.
What is cultural relativism?
An ethical theory that states that right and wrong are relative to one’s own culture.
What are the two (2) elements of cultural relativism?
Diversity thesis & dependency thesis.
What is diversity thesis?
A belief that ethical standards and moral conduct differ from culture to culture.
What is dependency thesis?
What individuals should do based on their own cultural standards.
