normal anatomical position
standing upright, facing the viewer, with the palms of the hands facing forward
frontal(coronal) plane
divides the body into front and back sections
sagittal plane
divides the body into left and right sections
mid-sagittal plane
divides the body exactly down the middle
parasagittal plane
divides the body down the middle, but not exactly down the midline
transverse(horizontal) plane
divides the body into upper and lower sections
oblique plane
any section not dividing at a 90-degree angle
longitudinal plane
any plane perpendicular to the transverse plane, ex sagittal
superior(cephalic)
above, higher than
closer to the head on humans
inferior(caudal)
below, lower than
closer to the feet on humans
anterior(ventral)
in front
generally towards the belly side of humans
posterior(dorsal)
behind
generally towards the back on humans
deep
farther from the surface
superficial
closer to the surface

pertaining to the opposite side
