Blood Analysis
What are the features of a Neutrophil (WBC)?
Horse-shoe shaped, multi-lobed nucleus and pale granules
What are the features of a Lymphocyte (WBC)?
Larger than most cells, nucleus occupies most of the cell
What are the features of a Monocyte (WBC)?
Nucleus is horse-shoe shaped, larger cell, no granules
What does a PINK blood tube colour indicate?
EDTA
What does a WHITE blood tube colour indicate?
No anti-coagulant
What does a BROWN blood tube colour indicate?
No anti-coagulant (with serum)
What does a YELLOW blood tube colour indicate?
fluoride/ oxalate
What does a PCV do?
Packed Cell Volume- measures the proportion of plasma within the blood
What are the PCV ranges of a dog and cat?
DOG: 37-55 CAT: 24-45
What is the needle size/colour for a dog?
23 gauge x 5/8’’ (blue)
What is the needle size/colour for a cat?
21 gauge x 5/8’’ or 1’’ (green)
What is the vein sites of a dog and cat?
Ear Vein, Jugular Vein, Cephalic, Lateral Sephenous and Medial Sephenous
Define Serum.
obtained from a clotted sample, no clotting factors (fibrinogen)
Define Plasma.
obtained after spinning a sample, anticoagulant present
