What temperature extremes are seen as “red flags” in neonates?
> 100.4F or <96.8F is concerning because of their underdeveloped immune systems
What is the priority action if a foreign body becomes embedded in the eye?
Both eyes should be shielded to prevent further injury (the eyes move in synchrony)
What is palifermin?
A recombinant human keratinocyte growth factor med that prevents oral mucositis in pts with hematologic malignancies. It does not help with pain.
Can ACE inhibitors be given during pregnancy?
No. They are teratogenic.
What is Sjogren’s syndrome?
A chronic autoimmune disorder where the moisture producing glands of the body are attacked by WBC. This leads to dryness in throat, mouth and vagina, and on the skin.
What is the therapeutic range for digoxin?
0.5-2.0 ng/mL
What amount of chest tube drainage should be reported to the HCP?
Anything >100mL/hr, esp. postop.
In the case of acute blood loss, what position should the patient be put in?
Supine. This will increase perfusion to the brain.
How many mL are in 3/4 cup?
180mL
What is the best indicator of treatment effectiveness in a pt with pneumonia?
WBC as it will reflect the effectiveness of the antibiotics
What is the symptom triad for a fat embolism?
- Mental status changes
- Petechiae rash over neck and chest
- Respiratory distress
How is cranial nerve 7 (the facial nerve) assessed?
By assessing exaggerated facial movements like raise the eyebrows, frowning, or smiling.
Where do you check for a pulse on an unresponsive infant?
The brachial artery
What is pulsus paradoxus?
An exaggerated fall in systemic BP (>10 mmHg) during inspiration
Are NG tubes appropriate following bariatric surgery?
No they can cause hemorrhage and anastomotic leakage.
