Week 2 Flashcards
List the 5 objectives of epidemiology
- Identify the cause and risk factors of the disease.
- Determine the extent and patterns of disease in the community (surveillance).
- Understand the natural history of the disease so intervention can be established and assessed.
- Evaluate both existing and newly developed preventative and therapeutic measures and methods of health care.
- To provide the foundations of public health policy.
What is a case?
A case is who is suffering from a health outcome.
What must precise case definition include?
It must include; Person Time Place Info on health outcome Has the disease occurrence changed with time
Define the population as risk
A certain portion of the population who is much more exposed to dangers or harm, in comparison to the larger population.
What is exposure?
It is what may be causing a health outcome aka risk factor.
What is a health outcome?
Something that occur as a result of a exposure / risk factor.
What is a cohort?
A group of people that share something in common.
Define Association
How likely a health outcome is with or without a exposure.
What is a extraneous risk factor?
Other risk factors that need to be taken into account.
Define sample
A sample is drawn from a source of population when resources do not allow the entire population to be studied. Results are then generalised to a larger target population.
