Week 2 Flashcards
List a few Driver characteristics. What is the goal when trying to ensure safety for all driver characteristics? Can we just use average values of all drivers?
- varying abilities to hear, see, evaluate, react to info
- the same individual might have varying abilities depending on different conditions (impairment, fatigue, time of day, weather)
What is the goal when trying to ensure safety for all driver characteristics? Can we just use average values of all drivers?
- goal is to accomadate abilities of as many drivers with REASONABLE cost
- thus, we can’t just use the average values
4 Human response processes
- peripheral vision
- color vision
- glare recovery
- depth perception
PIEV reception reaction process
P - perception; seeing any object on the road
I - identifying object
E - Emotion; deciding what action to take in response to I
V-volition (reaction) - execution of the action
Vehicle Characteristics
Static - weight and size
Kinematic - motion (not considering forces that caused the motion)
Dynamic - forces that caused the motion of vehicle
What is a design vehicle?
-designing a road/highway based on the characteristics of a design vehicle that will encompass the traits of nearly all cars that go on that road
Road design parameters (3).
1) Stopping Sight distance
=PIEV distance + Braking distance
-shorter on upgrades, longer on downgradse (look at +/- G)
2) Decision sight distance
-longer stopping sight distance, required when a stimulus is unexpected or when driver makes unusual maneouvres
3) Passing sigh distance
- minimal sight distance required on a two lane that will permit a driver to complete a passing manoeuvre without cutting off the other drive and without colliding with an opposing vehicle
