Week 2 Flashcards
What is modularity?
The notion that mental phenomena arise form the operation of multiple distinct processes as opposed to a single undifferentiated one.
What is a module?
An infomration processing mechanism which is domain specific - responsible for processing specific types of information.
What are tracts and nerves, and are they in CNS or PNS?
Bundles of axons, tracts are found in the CNS (Whitte matter), and nerves are in PNS
What are nuclie and ganglions, and are they in CNS or PNS
Groups of neuron cell bodies, nuclei in CNS (grey matter)and ganglions in PNS
Name the two division of the forebrain, and what each divisions consists of
Telencephalon - cerebral cortex, limbic system, basal ganglia
Diencephalon - thalamus, hypothalamus
Give another name for the midbrain, and what it consists of
Mesencephalon - superior colliculi and inferior colluculi
Give the two divisions of the hindbrain and what they consist of
Melencephalon - pons, cerebellum
Myelencephalon - medulla
Name some functions of the medulla
Hear rate, breathing, life regulating functions
Name some functions of the pons
sleep, arousal
Name some functions of the cerebellum
motor co-ordination, voluntary muscle movement
Name the functions of the superior and inferior colliculi
superior - visual information and attention
inferior - auditory info and attention
Where is the thalamus and what does it do?
Diencephalon, Relay station to cortex, processes sensory input, influence on motor and cognitive
Where is the hypothalamus and what does it do?
Diencephalon, regulation of biological requirements, thirst and hunger, controls pituitary gland
Where is the basal ganglia and what does it do?
Telencephalon, planning and producing movement
Where is the limbic system, what structures comprise it, and what does it do?
Telencephalon, Amygdala, hippocampus, fornix, cingular cortex/gyrus, septum, olfactory bulb, mammilary bodies, learning and memory, expression of emotion
