Week 2 Flashcards
** What are the ingredients for Xiao Jian Zhong Tang (6)? What formula is this based off of? What are the actions of this formula?
- Yi Tang
- Gui Zhi
- Shao Yao - *18g - double dose
- Zhi Gan Cao

- Da Zao
* Based on Gui Zhi Tang + #1 & #3
* Strengthens SP/ST - Harmonizes Yin & Yang/ Tonifying/Warming
** Warms & Tonifies the MJ & moderates spasmodic ABD pain
Dang Gui (lifts), Xi Xin (lifts), Huang Qi (lifts) & Mu Tong (drains/goes down) are more _______ herbs in character
Yang/Wei/Moving
Gui Zhi, Gan Cao & Sheng Jiang are more _____ in nature
Corrective - esp for sweating from Xu
Shao Yao, Da Zao & Yi Tang are more _______ herbs in character
Yin/Tonifying in nature - boosts & support MJ
Which formula is for more severe Qi Xu with spontaneous sweating, occasional fevers, thin, faint, frail pulse, spasmodic ABD pain with all kinds of insufficiency?
Huang Qi Jian Zhong Tang - Tonifies Qi of SP & LU
What are the ingredients for Huang Qi Jian Zhong Tang?
- Hung Qi
- Yi Tang
- Gui Zhi
- Shao Yao - *18g - double dose
- Zhi Gan Cao
- Sheng Jiang
- Da Zao
** What are the ingredients for Da Jian Zhong Tang (4)? What are the actions of this formula?
- Hua Jiao
- Gan Jiang
- Ren Shen
- Yi Tang
* This formula is a Major Warmer - Constructs Middle Qi & strengthens
*Warms & tonifies MJ XU, directs rebellious qi downward, & alleviates pain
** What are the ingredients for Si Ni Tang (3)? What are the actions for this formula? *Use for short duration. Caution: Use only when no concern of Yin XU
- Fu Zi (Primal Qi) - 6-9G
- Gan Jiang (Post-Natal Qi) - 4.5 G
- Zhi Gan Cao - 6 G
* Yang Qi disobeys charge of warming the 4 extremities which are sometimes described as “the root of all yang” in the body.
Actions: Rescues devastated yang, warms the middle burner, and stops diarrhea.
Indications: Extremely cold extremities, aversion to cold, curling up when lying down, lethargy with a constant desire to sleep, vomiting, diarrhea with undigested food particles, abdominal pain & cold, lack of thirst, a pale tongue with a white, slippery coating, and a submerged and thin or faint pulse.
What are the ingredients for Si Ni Jia Ren Shen Tang (4)? When would you use this formula?
- Fu Zi (Primal Qi)
- Gan Jiang - (Post-Natal Qi)
- Zhi Gan Cao
- Ren Shen - generate fluids - sweet/warm/cool
* Severe injury to the Yin & blood which harms the source Qi - - - less strong than Si Ni Tang bc of coolness and fluids of Ren Shen (Qi is the commander of Blood - once Qi is restored/blood will return)
What are the ingredients for Tong Mai Si Ni Tang (3)? When would it be best to use this formula? Caution: Use only when no concern of damaging Yin - used rarely
- Zhi Gan Cao - 6g
- Sheng Fu Zi - _*12-24G_
- Gan Jiang - **9-12G*
* Restores the yang & unblocks the pulse. For lesser yin D/O’s with true cold in the interior & false heat in the exterior characterized by diarrhea w. undigested food particles, cold extremities, a faint or hidden pulse that is almost imperceptible, but NO aversion to cold. In this pattern, the yin in the interior is so strong that it rejects the yang, which thereupon floats to the exterior.
What are the ingredients for Bai Tong Tang? When would it be best to use this formula? Caution: Use only when no concern of damaging Yin - used rarely
- Sheng Fu Zi - *9-15G
- Gan Jiang - *3G
- Cong Bai - *4 pieces unblock vessels strongly but shortlived
* Unblocks the yang and breaks up accumulations of yin. This is a lesser yin disorder characterized by diarrhea, lassitude, cold extremities, flushed face, and a faint pulse. The symptoms of this pattern indicate that yin is increasing and accumulating in the lower part of the body, forcing the weakened yang to the upper part of the body.
What are the ingredients for Shen Fu Tang (2)? When is it approriate to use this formula? Is it weaker or stronger than Si Ni Tang & Si Ni Jia Ren Shen Tang?
- Ren Shen - 15G
- Zhi Fu Zi - 30G - raise Yang/Warm
* Yang Xu is more important to treat & help restore Qi. This formula restores Yang strongly tonifies the source Qi & rescues the Qi from collapse due to devastated Yang
WEAKER/milder than Si Ni Tang & Si Ni Jia Ren Shen Tang
Indications: Cold extremities, sweating, weak breathing & SOB, dizziness, pale complexion, pale tongue & faint pulse.
Which formula should be used once you’ve raised devastated Yang & want to use something milder than Si Ni Tang?
Gan Cao Gan Jiang Tang
What is the sole ingredient in Du Shen Tang? What are the actions of this formula?
* Ren Shen
* Tonifies the source Qi & stabilize collapse (Qi collapse following blood loss) - post partom
* prepared with 5 pieces of Da Zao
Indications: Acute severe blood loss or heart failure characterized by an extremely pale complexion, lethargic state, cold extremities, excessive sweating, weak breathing & a faint or thin pulse
** Fu Zi not used because of weakness of patient - don’t want to increase HR - need to restore Qi in order to restore blood.
** Which formula tends to be more nourishing with herbs that tip the balance to more of the Ying side?
Xiao Jian Zhong Tang
