Confidence in reason
confidence that good reasoning is being used as the fundamental criterion for accepting or rejecting a belief.
Critical thinking
critical thinking is a process by which the thinker improves the quality of his or her thinking by skillfully taking charge of the structures inherent in thinking and imposing intellectual standards upon them
Ethnicity
the identification of a group based national origin or distinctive culture. (cultural differences define a group)
Fair-minded thinker
strives to treat every viewpoint relevant to a situation in an unbiased, unprejudiced way. All viewpoints are treated alike.
Independent thinking
the critical thinker will think through the merits and demerits of those viewpoints for him/herself.
Intellectual autonomy
thinking for oneself; thinking independently
Intellectual conformity
agreeing with the popular opinion/decision
Intellectual courage
addressing ideas, beliefs or viewpoints that are perceived as dangerous; accepting ideas that do not conform to our own.
Intellectual empathy
putting yourself in the place of others to understand their points of view.
Intellectual humility
recognizing the limits of your own knowledge, of your biases and prejudices, of the limitations of your viewpoints and the extent of your ignorance.
Intellectual integrity
being true to one’s own thinking; holding standards high; practicing what we preach.
Intellectual perseverance
working one’s way through an intellectually challenging task without giving up.
Purpose
a goal or end. For a purpose to be achieved it must be realistic, obtainable, and clearly stated
Race
Each of the major divisions of humankind, having distinct physical characteristics. (physical differences define a group)
Reasoning
the mental processes of those who reason; especially the drawing of conclusions of inferences from observations, facts, or hypotheses
