Q

What is an urban heat island

A

An urban area surrounded by rural areas, creating a heat island within the city.
Mostly due to roads absorbing heat and taking a long time to dissipate.
The greener the area, the quicker heat dissipates

Q

List 5 approaches to valuing ecosystem services

A

Production
* Trace impact of change in ecosystem services on produces goods
Cost of illness
* Trace impact of change in ecosystem services on morbidity and mortality
Relocation costs
* Use cost of replacing the lost goods or service eg. Pollination & water filtration and how much it would cost to replace these services
Travel cost
* Derive demand curve from data on travel costs
Hedonic pricing
* Extract effect of environmental factors on price of goods that include those factors eg. House price increase on greener areas

Q

What does the value of ES depend on?

A

Depends where people are.
Eg. Amazon provides carbon but only provides flood control to Manaus
Thus, small patches of greenery can provide huge benefits
