WEEK 2 Flashcards
Post week learning reflection
What do greener and more ecologically diverse urban areas provide to humans (mentally)
Better mental health and physical health of residents
Better city economy (Real state etc)
What is an urban heat island
An urban area surrounded by rural areas, creating a heat island within the city.
Mostly due to roads absorbing heat and taking a long time to dissipate.
The greener the area, the quicker heat dissipates
How do animals tend to deal with high human interaction
They become more active at night
What happens on low riparian vegetation
Higher water temperature and more erosion and sedimentation
What are ecosystem services?
Benefits provided to humans through the transformations of environmental assets, including land, water, vegetation & atmosphere into a flow of essential goods and services (eg. clean water, air and food)
What is a Supporting ecosystem service
Nutrient cycle
Soil formation
Primary production of goods
What is a Provisioning ecosystem service
Food
Freshwater
Wood and fiber
Fuel
Raw materials
What is a Regulating ecosystem service
Climate regulation
Food | |
Disease | |
Water Purification
What is a Cultural ecosystem service
Aesthetical values
Spiritual
Educational
Recreational
What does the ecosystem services ties into towards humans
Constituents of Well-Being
Eg.
Security, Basic materials for good life, health and social relations
What is a consumptive ecosystem value
Products we can consume eg. Meat, milk, corn etc
What is a non-consumptive ecosystem value
Ecosystem services that provides humans with beneficial experiences eg. Hiking, pic-nics, kayaking etc
List 5 approaches to valuing ecosystem services
Production
* Trace impact of change in ecosystem services on produces goods
Cost of illness
* Trace impact of change in ecosystem services on morbidity and mortality
Relocation costs
* Use cost of replacing the lost goods or service eg. Pollination & water filtration and how much it would cost to replace these services
Travel cost
* Derive demand curve from data on travel costs
Hedonic pricing
* Extract effect of environmental factors on price of goods that include those factors eg. House price increase on greener areas
What does the value of ES depend on?
Depends where people are.
Eg. Amazon provides carbon but only provides flood control to Manaus
Thus, small patches of greenery can provide huge benefits
Are ES more & less relevant in certain places?
Yes.
