Dermatology: study of the skin
What is the body’s largest organ?
skin
What are the two layers of the skin?
Epidermis and Dermis
What are the 5 functions of the skin?
1.Chemical, Biological and physical barrier
2.Vitamin D synthesis
3.Sensation
4.Thermoregulation and blood reservoir
5. Vasoconstriction
Why is Vitamin D synthesis important for the body?
Vitamin synthesis, which is needed for Calcium absorption, occurs in the skin.
How does the skin help regulate body temperature?
Vasoconstriction and vasodilation of cutaneous blood vessels and secretions from sweat glands help maintain body temp.
What are the 5 types of cells in the epidermis?
- Stem cells
- Keratinocytes
- Melanocytes
- Merkel cells
- Dendritic
What is keratin, and what cells produce it?
keratin is a hard substance and made by keratinocytes.
What is melanin, what cells produce it, and what cells absorb it?
Melanin is the pigment of the skin, produced by melanocytes, and absorbed by keratinocytes.
What are the names of macrophages found in the epidermis?
Dendritic (Langerhans)
What is the most abundant cell type in the epidermis?
Keratinocytes

What layer is present in the thick skin that is not present in the thin skin?
Stratum lucidum
What layer is the site of cell death?
Stratum Corneum
What is the tissue type of the dermis?
connective tissue
