4 ethical considerations for surveys and interviews?
- Voluntary participation?
- Informed consent? (They must understand what’s happening completely).
- Confidentiality and anonymity? (E.g by giving people unique IDs).
- Research bias? (What we think or believe may influence how we ask the questions).
2 types of research
- deductive reasoning
* Inductive reasoning
Deductive reasoning (confirmatory research)
Start with a hypothesis and then data is collected.
Inductive reasoning (exploratory research)
Start with data and then conclusions are made.
Problems with interview questions: Objective truth
People may report things differently than how they occur.
Problems with interview questions: subjective truth
Different people may view the same things in different ways.
Leading questions
Gets the person to respond in a certain way (e.g the economy is clearly in crisis, wouldn’t you agree?).
Open Vs closed questions
- open questions are used in interviews
* Closed questions are used in surveys
Positionality (as the interviewer)
- how you see yourself
- How people respond to you
- How you perceive and interpret your responses
Salience, credibility, and legitimacy
- Salience = Societal and political RELEVANCE
- Credibility = LOGIC and soundness of information
- Legitimacy = FAIR representation of views and how they were derived.
