Q

Human-technology interfaces

A
  • Input or control interface: The hardware used to operate or control a device
  • Selection set: Items from which choices are made
  • Selection methods: Direct - the individual is able to use the control interface to randomly choose any of the items in the selection set; Indirect - intermediate steps are involved in making a selection

Q

Switch Interfaces: Battery interrupter/adapter

A

This can transform any battery operated toy or electronic device for switch activation. The copper wafer is placed against the end of the battery. A switch is connected to the jack end and operation of the switch will result in turning on the toy.

16
Q

Switch interfaces: switch latch

A

one touch of the switch turns the device on. The device stays on until the switch is activated again.

17
Q

Switch interfaces: timer

A

the device will run for a set amount of time after the switch is activated. The device stops after the pre-set time is reached (even if the switch is held on).

18
Q

Switch interfaces: switch latch-timer

A

this interface has both of the features of a timer and switch latch

19
Q

Switch interfaces: jack adapter

A

used to convert the size of the switch jack to match the size on the toy or interface.

20
Q

Adaptive computing

A

Software

  • Intellitools Suite
  • Boardmaker/Dynamically Speaking Pro

Word completion
- Type the first couple of letters and word choices appear

Word prediction
- Will predict what the next word will be based on context and phrases typically used

21
Q

Technology abandonment

A
  • 1/3 of individuals discontinue using their assistive technology devices
  • May be due to failure to take these into consideration: Preferences, Ideas, Desires, Expectations of device, Support available
