Aggrandize
To increase the power, status, or wealth of someone or something, often in a way that is exaggerated or unjustified.
Example: The CEO’s decisions seemed to aggrandize his own position rather than benefiting the company.
Arcane
Arcane (adjective) - Understood by only a few; mysterious or obscure.
Example: The arcane rituals of the ancient society were only passed down to a select few members.
Candor
The quality of being open, honest, and straightforward.
Example: She appreciated his candor in discussing the challenges they faced in the project.
Elicit
To draw out or provoke a response, often a reaction or information.
Example: The detective was able to elicit a confession from the suspect after hours of questioning.
Garrulous
Excessively talkative, especially about trivial matters.
Example: The garrulous neighbor could talk for hours without ever getting to the point.
Gratuitous
Given or done without any good reason; unnecessary or uncalled for.
Example: The movie contained gratuitous violence that seemed to serve no purpose to the plot.
Hapless
Unfortunate or unlucky, often in a way that is persistent or inevitable.
Example: The hapless traveler missed his flight and lost his luggage on the same day.
Insurgent
A person who rebels against authority, often in a violent or revolutionary manner. The term can also be used to describe rebellious activities.
Example: The government sent troops to quash the insurgent uprising in the rural areas.
Knell
The sound of a bell, especially when rung slowly for a funeral or death; a signal of the end or failure of something.
Example: The church bell tolled the knell of the deceased, signaling the end of an era in the town.
Pithy
Brief and full of meaning or substance; concise and to the point.
Example: His pithy remarks during the meeting made a lasting impression on the team.
