Week 12 - Sleep and Sleep Disorders Flashcards
What are the several ways to measure sleep?
Objective:
- Polysomnography (PSG)
- Actigraphy
Subjective:
- Sleep diary
- Self-report questionnaireires
How does Polysomnography measure sleep?
Brain waves - EEG
Eye movement - EOG
Muscle activity - EMG
Breathing and airflow
Heart rate and rhythm - ECG
O2 Saturation - SpO2
What does EEG show?
Difference in electrical potential between pairs of electrodes placed on the scalp
Y-axis = voltage
X- axis = time
EEG traces show continuous fluctuation of electrical activity in the brain
What are the types of waves that EEG shows?
Beta waves
Alpha waves
Theta waves
Delta waves
What do sleep waves show in terms of its frequency?
faster = more alert/wake
slower = drowsier/deeper sleep
What are the characteristics of each stage of sleep
