Week 12: Routing Basics Flashcards
What is a limitation of a static route?
In the event of a network failure, the onus is on the network administrator to manually make changes.
What situations call for the use of static routing?
a. Default routes through Firewalls
b. Limit routing protocol participation
c. Simple non-redundant situations
Can you describe two types of routing protocols?
a. Distance Vector - Just knows the next hop - routes by rumor and only knows its next neighbor
b. Link State - Knows everything about the topology as it maintains 3 tables. Send a map of the entire network to all other routers
What is a floating static route used for?
A. is a static route with an administrative distance higher than that of the routing protocol in use.
B. If a route fails the static with a higher administrative distance takes over.
Why use loopback interfaces?
a. Tie certain services to the interface. Loopback interfaces never go down. Always up/up.
b. Think of it as a virtual interface so tie voice to the loopback so there is no way for an interface to go down.
c. Good for testing and stability. If physical interfaces are down the router still can gave active loopback interfaces.
