Week 12 Review Flashcards
Definition: Evidence-Based Practice
The conscientious, explicit and judicious use of theory-derived, research-based information in making decisions about patient care delivery to individuals or groups of patients and in consideration of individual needs and preferences
Evidence-based practice and research utilization are:
Tools that practicing nurses use to ensure that they are equipped to make the most informed decisions about patient care.
Difference between evidence-based practice & research utilization
Evidence-based practice starts with the identification of a clinical problem and seeks research-based evidence to support decision-making.
Research utilization refers to finding a practical use for findings from a research study or studies in the real world of nursing practice.
Research utilization:
Conceptual level vs. practical level
Conceptual Level: your practice is informed by research findings
Practical Level: you actually change what you are doing and how you do it based on research results.
Research utilization: Instrumental
Research findings that lead to concrete application in nursing interventions (changes are a direct result in research findings)
Research utilization: Persuasive
Used as a tool to persuade others to change interventions, either at the individual or organizational level
Steps that guide evidence-based practice
- Problem identification
- Evidence collection
- Evidence appraisal
- Evidence integration and intervention implementation
- Outcome evaluation
- Disseminate outcome
IOWA Model (1994)
- Designed to promote quality care.
- Quality assurance measures & Emphasis on multi-level organizational involvement
- Examines problem-focused and knowledge-focused triggers to identify a topic
Stetler Model of Research Utilization (1976; 2001)
-Designed to promote critical thinking about application of research in the clinical area by individual nurse clinicians
5 process phases:
1. Preparation
2. Validation
3. Comparative Evaluation/ Decision-Making
4. Translation/Application
5. Evaluation
Rosswurm & Larabee Model (1999)
-Designed to facilitate a change to EBP 6 cyclic steps (similar to Nursing Process): 1. Assess need for change 2. Link interventions to outcomes 3. Synthesize the evidence 4. Design the practice change 5. Implement and evaluate the change 6. Integrate and maintain the change
ACE Star Model of Knowledge Transformation (2004)
-Initially developed as a framework to organize EBP processes and produce knowledge transformation 5 step process: 1. Discovery 2. Summary 3. Translation 4. Integration 5. Evaluation
