Kinesics
The study of body motion used in communication it includes eye contact, facial expression, posture and gestures
Non-verbal communication
These are bodily acts or vocal qualities that accompany a vocal message.
The use of physical space and presentation of self through appearance.
What the three elements of face to face communication
1) Bodily action that occured (most resonance 55%)
2) vocal variety (tone, pitch of voice)
3) words (least resonance 7%)
What is affect display
These are the facial expressions and gestures that augment the verbal expressions and feeling
- Mainly facial expression, body and voice
- Take place automatically and very noticable
- can be deintensified e.g poker face or over expressive
Gestures
Movement of particular parts of body especially the hands, arms also head
Emblems
Gestures that can be used to take the place of a word or phrase e.g. thumbs up
Illustrators
Non-verbal gestures to illustrate what the speaker is saying
Regulators
Facial expressions or gestures to control or regulate teh flow of a conversation
Adaptors
These are gestures used to relive tension e.g. foot tapping or scratching head
Define proxemics
- The study of non-verbal channel of proximity
- Informal space that is around us at a particular point in time
- Different zones according to intimacy and perceived closeness
Define posture
- Disposition of the whole body there are three main postures - Standing - Sitting/ squatting/ kneeling - Lying down
the four major functions of gaze
1) to seek feedback
2) to inform others when to talk
3) to signal the nature of a relationship
4) to compensate for physical distance
