WEEK 12 (Composites) Flashcards
Damage Classifications
- Cosmetic defects
- Impact Damage
- Delamination Damage
- Crack Damage
- Hole Damage
A defect on outer surface of the skin that does not involve damage of structural fibers.
Caused by chipping or scratching during handling and does not affect strength of the part.
Negligible/Cosmetic damage
Damage occurred by if composite was struck by a foreign object. (Bird strike, hail, FOD)
Impact Damage
_____ is the separation of layers of material laminate.
Moisture on fabric, Lightning strike can cause this.
Delamination
____ can occur to advanced composite materials, like metallic ones. Can be found visually.
Other times requires NDI - Non Destructive Inspection
Crack Damage
_______ may occur from impact damage, over-torquing fasteners or as the result of fastener pull through.
Hole damage
_______ inspection can be made more effective through the use of a good light source and through the use of magnification, normally a hand held 10 Power magnifying glass.
Visual inspection
The ______ test is a form of NDI used to detect internal flaws or areas where delamination has occurred.
It used to follow up visual test if you suspect an internal damage.
‘Coin Tap Test’
_____ testing uses a high frequency sound wave as a means of detecting flaws in the part.
Ultrasonic Inspection
______ (Inspection) locates flaws by temperature variations at the surface of a damaged part.
Uses an infrared camera or film. You need to have the knowledge about the material you’re inspecting.
Thermography
______ (Inspection) makes use of high energy particles emitted from a radioactive source or from an X-Ray tube.
‘GAMMA RAYS’ are mostly used.
Radiography
LPI
Liquid Penetrant Inspection
MPI
Magnetic Particle Inspection
Gamma ray source:
might not be in the test
Iridium - 192
or
Cobalt - 60
