Week 12 (14) FINAL Flashcards
What is Peter Singer’s view on doping? Identify one objection to Singer’s view and Singer’s response to that objection.
Athletes take whatever drug they want, as long as it’s safe to do so, so we should be worried about drug effects on health not worried about drug dealers
1. it’s unfair to let athletes dope
R: it unfair to not let players dope becuase doping levels the playing field. If no one takes drugs, then the genentically gifted have an unfair advantage
2. it’s contrary to the spirit of sport
R: not anymore than other things people do (ex. IV hydration)
R: sport doesn’t have a single purpose or spirit
Why might one claim that the right way to settle the ethical issue that Lindsay is out to address is to ask Native Americans what they think? How might one respond to this move?
RESPONSE:
- happy campers on every plantation
- it can be possible that they are ok with something they shouldn’t be ok with
- can be disrespected without them realizing, people can also be brainwashed
- it’s not what they think it’s what we should think
- even if we do ask, it’s impossible to find consensus within the community
What is Lindsay’s argument(s) for the conclusion that Native American team names are unethical?
Argument 1:
Premise 1: Sport is trivial
Premise 2: if sport is trivial, then naming a team after something trivializzes that thing, and it is offensive to reduce people to just a trivial thing
Conclusion: native american team names trivialize native amaericans
Argument 2:
Premise 1: native american team names trivialize native amaericans
Premise 2: trivializing a group causes harm, which is especially true if a group has been through oppresion
Conclusion: native american team names cause native americans harm
Argument 3:
Premise 1: if something causes someone harm, then it is unethical
Premise 2: native american team names cause native americans harm
Conclusion: Native american team names are unethical
