Week 11 - Migration and Global Public Health Flashcards
World Population
Less Developed Countries are rapidly increasing populations while developed countries remain stable in population.
Why?
* Less developed countries are more labour intensive and require more people
* Lack of access to birth control and family planning
Age dependancy ratio
Ratio of dependants (children 0-14 or seniors) compared to working age population
data shows much less seniors compared to children, which shows the low life expectancy in less developed countries
China’s 1 Child Policy
Lowers the population in china for future generations.
Bad news:
* Selective abortions and gender disparity (many more boys being born than girls ~118 boys to 100 girls)
Empower Women Approach
“The demographic dividend”: a period of rapid econoomic growth that occur’s when a country’s population structure shifts which leads to a larger proportion of working-age individuals relative to dependants (seniors, children).
Harnessing the Demographic Dividend:
* Education: Well-educated workforce remains roductive for longer and becomes dependant later in life
* Healthcare: A healthy workforce remains productive for longer and becomes dependant later in life
By making these investments, countries can capitalize on the demographic dividend and achieve sustained economic growth.
World Population Growth
The annual growth rate of the world population is gradually decreasing every year. By 2100, we are projected to start decreasing in numbers as a world population (-0.1% yearly growth in population by 2100).
In what ways are migration and forced migration connected to globalization, conflict, and climate change?
Migration connected to globalization:
* Increased economic opportunities, migrating in search for better job opportunities
Migration connected to conflict:
* Conflicts often force people to flee their homes, leading to both displacement within a country and displacement outside of the country
Migration connected to climate change:
* Environmental disasters induced by climate change (floods, tornados, droughts) can force people to migrate away from their homes
How does inequality shape global health outcomes?
Inequality significantly shapes global health outcomes:
* Access to Healthcare (stems from economic and geographic inequality)
* Inequality from health disparities between individuals
* Inequality from environmental factors such as pollution and climate change
How does state capacity shape global health outcomes?
A state with strong capacity can effectively implement public health policies, allocate resources, and respond to health crises.
Ex. Vaccination programs, health insurance, medical supplies, response to pandemics, analysis on health data to monitor health risks, public health interventions.
What is the “demographic dividend,” and how is it related to economic development?
