Q

What is the difference between dropping a background with a clipping path versus with transparency?

A

Clipping paths are vector drawn paths that create a crisp, sharp edge. Photoshop images that use transparency to remove the background create a soft, blended edge between the graphic and the background.

Q

What is the difference between updating a graphic file’s link and relinking the file?

A

Updating a file’s link simply uses the Links panel to update the onscreen representation of a graphic so that it represents the most recent version of the original. Relinking a selected graphic uses the Place command to allow you to insert a different graphic in place of the selected graphic.

Q

When an updated version of a graphic becomes available, how do you make sure that it’s up to date in your InDesign document?

A

In the Links panel, make sure that no modified link icon is displayed for the file. If a modified link icon is displayed, you can simply select the link and click Update Link. If the file has been moved, a missing link icon appears in the Status column in the Links panel, and you must locate it again using Relink.

18
Q

Which of these choices in the Effects panel removes effects, but not blending mode or opacity from an object?

A

Delete or Trash Can icon

19
Q

How can you create color interactions between stacked objects in InDesign?

A

Use blending modes

20
Q

What must you do differently to apply transparency effects to a multicolor photograph as compared to any other InDesign object?

A

Nothing, the process is the same as applying transparency effects to any other InDesign object

21
Q

To apply transparency settings to text, you must first

A

Use the Selection tool to select the frame the text is in

22
Q

Which transparency effect should you apply to an object to create a 3D effect that makes it appear to float above the page?

A

Drop Shadow

23
Q

The types of feathering effects in InDesign are Basic Feather, Directional Feather, and

A

Gradient Feather

24
Q

To create more random elements in the opacity of a glow or shadow, which transparency setting should you increase?

A

Noise

25
Q

What’s the best way to make the color of a frame lighter when it has nothing behind it that needs to show through?

A

Use a tint of the desired color

26
Q

How do you apply a transparency setting or effect to different parts of an object?

A

Choose one of the levels in the Effects panel: Object level applies to the object as a whole, but you can also choose Stroke, Fill, or Text levels and apply separate settings to each.

27
Q

If you’ve applied transparency effects to an object, what is the easiest way to apply the same effects to a different object?

A

Select the object to which you’ve applied transparency effects, and then drag the FX icon displayed on the right side of the Effects panel to another object.

28
Q

What is the importance of the stacking order of layers and of objects within layers when you work with transparency?

A

The transparency of an object affects the view of objects below (behind) it in the stacking order and the appearance of the front object. For example, objects below a semitransparent object can be seen behind it—like objects behind a colored plastic film. By changing which objects are above (in front) or below (behind), the resulting color and/or effect can be quite different.

29
Q

How do you remove transparency effects from an object to which multiple effects are applied?

A

Select the object, and then click Clear Effects (Image) at the bottom of the Effects panel. This clears effects, blending modes, and opacity settings. Clicking the trash can clears only effects. You can also choose Clear All Transparency from the Effects panel menu.

30
Q

What is a limitation of applying effects to text?

A

Effects can be applied to the entire text frame only. They cannot be applied to separate words within a text frame.

31
Q

When is it better to use a tint instead of an opacity setting?

A

It’s better to use a tint when the object has nothing below it with which a transparency effect will interact, such as when it’s on top of a white background. In other words, if you simply want to make the object lighter and not have anything behind show through, use a tint.

32
Q

How can you access the Preflight panel?

A

Choose Window > Output > Preflight

Double-click an error listing at the bottom of the Document Window

Selecting Preflight Menu from the pop-up menu to the right of the error listing

All of these are ways to access the Preflight panel

33
Q

Which of these items are checked when you leave the default [Basic] preflight profile selected?

A

Overset text

Inaccessible URL links

Missing graphics and fonts

All of these answers are correct

34
Q

If documents need to be color-separated for commercial printing, you can use the ___ to gain a better understanding of how each portion of the document will print.

A

Separations Preview Panel

35
Q

Which statement is incorrect about the Ink Manager?

A

The Ink Manager affects how colors are defined in the document

36
Q

How can you preview the page to get an idea of how it will look when printed?

A

Click and hold down the Screen Mode button and choose Preview

37
Q

The most convenient way to share an InDesign document with someone who doesn’t have InDesign is

A

Export it directly from InDesign as a PDF

38
Q

InDesign files are submitted to commercial printers either as native files or

A

Press-Ready PDFs

39
Q

What happens to RGB colors in a document if you choose Composite CMYK in the Output Color menu?

A

All RGB colors are converted to CMYK

39
Q

Which of the following is not included when you use the Package command, even though they appear in your document?

A

Adobe Fonts available through Creative Cloud

40
Q

What problems does InDesign look for when using the [Basic] (Working) profile in the Preflight panel?

A

By default, the [Basic] (Working) profile in the Preflight panel confirms that all fonts used in the document or inside placed graphics are available. It also looks for linked graphic files and linked text files to confirm that they have not been modified since they were initially imported, and it warns you of missing graphic files and overset text frames (as well as unresolved caption variables, inaccessible URL links, and missing fonts).

41
Q

A way to organize elements in InDesign files that are intended for digital output is

A

Articles panel

42
Q

What elements does InDesign gather when it packages a file?

A

InDesign gathers a copy of the InDesign document along with copies of all the fonts and graphics used in the original document. The original files remain untouched. If you choose Update Graphic Links In Package, the links in the packaged InDesign file will be linked to the packaged links folder and not to their original location. If you select Include IDML, InDesign creates an IDML version of the document that can be opened in previous versions of InDesign. If you select Include PDF(Print), InDesign creates an Adobe PDF (Print) version of the document. If you choose to include a PDF, you can also choose a PDF preset. Note that Adobe Fonts are not packaged.

43
Q

How can you find where a color is used in an InDesign file?

A

Click the swatch in the Swatches panel and then choose Find This Color from the panel menu. It’s helpful to first choose Add Unnamed Colors so that all colors in the document are displayed in the Swatches panel. Or open the Find/Change dialog and click the Color tab. Then choose a color from the Find Color menu.

44
Q

What is the fastest way to replace one color with another?

A

Click the swatch that you want to replace in the Swatches panel and then click the trash can. When the dialog opens, replace this swatch with the desired one. This is the most efficient way to make sure a particular color is consistent throughout a document.

45
Q

What are the two industry-standard ways of preparing final files to send to a service provider such as a commercial printer?

A

The two standard methods are using a press-ready PDF with bleed and using the InDesign Package feature to create a folder with all components the service provider needs to work with the file (InDesign file, fonts, and linked graphics).
