Robert Browning (1812-1889)
-19th century English poet- educated and tutored at home in Camberwell, England
-Moved to Italy after marrying poet Elizabeth Barrett.
-As a poet, Borwning is known, in part, for inventing the dramatic monologue as a poetic form.
Wrote the poem, ‘My Last Duchess’
What is a monologue?
-Long speech uttered by one person without response or dialogue
-A dramatic monologue features a single first-person speaker who is clearly somebody other than the poet.
-usually some kind of event or occasion going on that forms the background of the poem.
The Duke as a Storyteller

-The Duke controls the image, and she is past tense
-Is her past or her portrait most important?
-Her likeness- realism of portrait, but also her image looks out from the portrait at the viewer.
