week 11 Flashcards
SSRI
Mechanism: blocks reuptake of 5-HT → increased concentration in neuronal synapse
by blocking the reuptake of 5 HT then there is more serontinin in the system
SNRIs
work similar to SSRI in blocking the reuptake of 5 hT
TCA
5-HT & NE reuptake inhibition
why are MAO inhibitors (MAOI) used for those with depression?
by blocking MAO –> leads to an increase NE and 5 - HT increase
when dealing with antidepressants what do we want to increase the concentration of or block the reuptake of
5-HT and/ or NE
what are three atypical antidepressants
Bupropion = mechanism uncles Mirtazapine = 5 HT and NE increased release Esketamine = NMDA receptor antagonist
what is a first generation antipsychitotic
Conventional antipsychotics
Cheaper
Extrapyramidal symptoms
NEUROLEPTICS:
Primary mechanism (theory):
block dopamine receptor in mesolimbic
area of brain
what is cheaper, a FGA or a SGA
FGA
what leads to more EPS, FGA or SGA
FGA
what would likely lead to weight gain or metabolic side effects - FGA or SGA?
FGA
