Ecological Succession
Succession that begins in an area that previously did not support life.
Primary Succession
The process by which one community replaces another community that has been partially or totally destroyed.
Secondary Succession
A species that colonizes an uninhabited area and that starts an ecological cycle in which many other species become established.
Pioneer Species
A final, stable community in equilibrium with the environment.
Climax Community
A large region characterized by a specific type of climate and certain types of plant and animal communities.
Biome
The average weather conditions in an area over a long period of time.
Climate
The distance north or south from the equator; expressed in degrees.
Latitude
The height of an object above a reference point, such as sea level or the Earth’s surface.
