What is group therapy?
treatment of psychological problems that involves
- two or more participants who interact with each other on emotional cognitive levels
- one or more psychotherapists who facilitate interactions
What are unique features of group therapy?
- allows for the development of a more complex network of relationships than individual therapy
- creates a range of interpersonal situations which therapists can observe for understanding, highlight for awareness and be used to practice new ways of interacting
What are potential challenges and ethical issues in group therapy?
- socializing among clients outside of group

- confidentiality
How do therapists address potential challenges in group therapy?
- set clear group rules at the start and review them regularly
- directly address issues that arise
- educate or use a meaningful material for therapy rather than punish
What are the two main theoretical orientations to group therapy?
- a by-product of pathological interpersonal interactions
- resulting from maladaptive strategies or inadequate skills
