when can family stress occur
when there are more stressors in family members lives than theyre able to cope with or manage
what are external stressors
things outside of the family like job loss, stress at school, racial discrimination, natural disaster
what are internal stressors
marital dissatisfaction, siblings fighting, PPD, death of a family member, perception of household chaos
how can stressors be transmitted among family members
directing negative behaviour toward one another
failing to provides sensitive support
observing another person under pressure
stressed people give off stress cues
this tells observer that there is a threat in environment and autonomic nervous system will respond accordingly
whats the difference between primary appraisal and secondary appraisal
primary appraisal: is there harm to self or others
secondary appraisal: resources available to manage the stressor
what is coping
strategies that individuals or families do to manage internal and external stressors
what does it look like when there is unaddressed stress in a family
arguments
substance overuse
family discord
difficulties outside the home
what is toxic stress
stressors that go on for too long
like abuse, poverty, neglect, marital conflict
stress can be good on occasion because it helps learn coping skills
how to help children in times of stress
supportive, protective relationships
maintain predictable routine
have good coping skills because children learn to cope by watching others cope
