What is a pseudo event and what are its 4 features?
The event transpires because it has been designed, orchestrated, or initiated by a person or group.
- It is chiefly orchestrated with the intention of “being reported or reproduced… its success is measured by how widely it is reported … [and] time relations in it are commonly fictitious
- The event’s relation to the essential reality of the circumstances is imprecise and indefinite.
- By and large it is designed to be a “self-fulfilling prophecy”

Seen as a “high holiday” of mass communication
Media event existed prior to the coining

Conquests (one time event), coronations (ceremonial, rites of passage, death) et contests (heroic contests like olympics)

The media event thesis was born in television’s golden ag and before the rise of the multi-channel universal
Media events refer to a time when the world was seen to stop and gather around a television set
Media event thesis established a rigid series of 11 criteria, each one having to be met to be a “true” media event.
However media events and the media event thesis have moved on. While they still exist, they have become much more common feature of media as will be discussed next class.
