Difference between reflection and critical reflection
Reflection- controlled, focused thought. Thinking back on a situation
Critical reflection- controlled focused thought- thinking back to situations to examines and investigations to examine and investigate with the goal of discovery and new learning
Ways to engage is reflective practice

- reflective writting

What does literature tell us about reflective practice?
- leads to deeper understanding
- helps us wort out where to find information
- grows nursing practice

When asked to write a reflection what’s one thing you DON’T do and what’s one thing you DO
DON’T- try not to get stuck at just writting about feelings
DO- reflect on perspectives, beliefs, and assumptions
Difference in writting a diary and reflective writting
Diary- describes individual perspectives and feelings, how events shape the individual
Reflective- aspects of perspectives and feelings but is more demanding and more complex
The problems with thinking…
We think we are thinking but its often
-surface level
-not always well informed by evidence, research, and literature
-includes bias and is imcomplete
What’s is critical thinking, what does it require
Self-directed, self-disciplined, slef-monitored, and self-corrective
Requires rigorous standards of excellence and mindful command of their use

Helps guide your thought process in order to grow nursing practice

Steps of gibbs reflective cycle
- Description- what happened
- Feelings -what were you feeling
- Evaluation- what was good or bad about the experience
- Analysis- what sense can you make of the situation
- Conclusion- what else could you have done
- Action plan- if it happened again what would you do ?
