What are venereal diseases?
An older term used to describe STIs
What are enthetic diseases?
A term used since the 19th century to indicate disease inoculated or implanted into the body from external sources, particularly infections, e.g. syphilis
What are sexually transmitted diseases?
Diseases that have been transmitted through sexual contact
What are sexually transmitted infections?
Infections that can be transmitted through sexual contact or through other means, which may or may not progress to a disease, but which are thereafter sexually transmittable.
What are blood-borne viruses?
A group of diseases caused by blood-borne pathogens that are transmitted via direct blood-to-blood contact, e.g. HIV/AIDS, Hep B, and Hep c
What are classical STIs? Give 3 examples
STIs that were identified before the 20th century. Include gonorrhoea, syphilis and donovanosis
What are modern STIs? Give three examples
STIs that have arisen/been identified in recent times. Include Hepatitis A, Chlamydia and HIV/AIDS
What are the priorities for the WHO regarding sexual health?
Adolescent sexual and reproductive health— primarily focusing on teenage pregnancy and HIV transmission
HIV related deaths
HIV, viral hepatitis, and STI prevention and transmission
What does HEADSS stand for?
Home Education, employment, eating, and exercise Activities and peer relationships Drug use, cigarettes, and alcohol Sexuality Suicide, depression, and mood
