Week 1 - What is Learning? Flashcards
What are the two different thinking modes called?
Focus mode and diffuse mode.
What characterizes the focused thinking mode?
As an analogy a pinball machine with somewhat tight space around the rubber bumpers, where the ball moves in a small area. The focused mode often involves thinking about subjects that you are somewhat familiar with. The focused mode is related to the prefrontal cortex.
What characterizes the diffuse thinking mode?
As an analogy a pinball machine with much space around the rubber bumpers tight rubber spacing, which allows the ball to move more freely. Broad perspective, new and unfamiliar things. New connections in the brain.
What are some ways of accessing the diffuse thinking mode?
Take a walk, go for a shower or just drift off to sleep.
What is the easiest way to tackle procrastination.
The Pomodoro technique.
In learning, for what kind of topics is practice and repetition especially important?
Abstract topics
Describe the Pomodoro technique.
25 minutes of focused learning followed by 5 min of mental relaxation.
Why is practice and repetition so important?
It enhance and strengthens the neural structures when we are learning something new.
How many slots does the working memory have?
4 slots
What is an analogy for working memory?
A not very good blackboard that keeps erasing itself.
What are the two types of memory?
Working memory and long term memory.
What is an analogy for long term memory?
A storage warehouse.
What is important when to build solid neural structures?
Practice and (spaced) repetition.
Why is sleep so important?
It washes away the toxins developed in the brain during the days activities.
In addition to sleep, what is important in order to improve our memory?
Exercise.
