Week 1: What is Learning Flashcards
What are the two different thinking modes?
Diffused and Focused
Describe Diffuse Mode
Thinking mode where we thinking in a broad sense
Describe Focused Mode
Thinking mode where we concentrate on a certain subject
What is spaced repetition?
When we spread out what we learn/practice over days rather than in one sitting.
Benefits of spaced repetition?
Solidifies information much better than doing it on sitting
Builds and strengthens the synaptic connections to form.
What is happening to our brains when are awake
Metabolic toxins are being created
What happens to our brains we get sleep?
- Brain cells shrink to increase space to let fluid pass and wash out toxins
- Cleans up ideas and concepts that aren’t necessary
- Strengthens what we need to remember
- Brain is rehearsing tougher material into order to strength the connection
What can we do if something is boring during a lecture?
Use active engagement, which brings rise to discussion
Benefits of exercise
- Allows brain to disengage from normal train of thought.
- Can lead to new ideas or thoughts
- Allows brain to create new neurons
Benefits of learning in different environments?
- Surround yourself in a creative environment can enhance own creativity
- Surrounded by like-minded people can help bounce off ideas
- Allows us to learn and recall information anywhere.
What is Self-Fulfilling Prophecies
Where one believes what is likely to happen.
If one believes they are able to do something, we can keep pushing towards it.
Give an analogy of spaced repetition in relation to building a brick wall
Like building a brick wall, we need to let the cement dry for the wall to be strong. Therefore we need to let information solidify, instead of forcing it.
Why do we end up procrastinating?
When we do something we don’t want to do, our brain things of that as pain. And decides to something else to get away from it.
What is a Pomodoro Method
Typically a 25min timer followed by a 5min mental relaxtion
What is Active Engagment?
Asking questions during a lecture to open up a discussion
