the basic parts of a story, setting, characters, plot, conflict, theme, point of view
story element
the time, place, and social context of the story
setting
the events and action of the story, a sequence of connected events
plot
introduces background information about events, settings, characters, or other elements of work to th reader
expostition
a series of events that builds from the conflict. It begins with the inciting conflict and ends with the climax
rising action
most exciting moment of the story;turning point
climax
the part of a literary plot that occurs after the climax has been reached and the conflict has been resolved.
falling action
the end of the action and conclusion of the story where all loose ends are tied up
resolution
struggle between opposing forces of the story
conflict
main character of the story
protagonist
a character or force in conflict with the main character
antagonist
a problem within a character, character vs self
internal conflict
character vs character, character vs nature, character vs society
external conflict
a person (sometimes animal) in a story
character
the quality of a character, what the character is like
character trait
the process by which the writer reveals the personality of the character
characterization
the author TELLS the reader what the character is like, the patient girl
direct characterization
the author SHOWs the reader what the character is like through the characters Speech, Thoughts, Actions, Effect on others, and Looks (think STEAL)
indirect characterizaiton
the character is fully developed-the writer reveals good and bad traits as well as background
round character
two-dimensional in that they are relatively uncomplicated and do not change through the course of a work
flat character
a character who grows, learns, or changes as a result of the story’s actions
dynamic character
a character that does not change from the beginning of the story until the end
static character
the message that the author has for the reader in a literary work, the life lesson
theme
the perspective from which the story is told (first, second, third)
point of view
a body of stories about gods and heros that try to explain how the world works
mythology
